It is located in Otero County, about 6 miles SW of Alamogordo, New Mexico. El Paso, Texas (90 miles) & Las Cruces, New Mexico (70 miles) are some surrounding cities. The base serves United States Air Force. It is the home of the 49th Fighter Wing. The size of the base is 12.7 square miles (59,639 acres). It has 21000 active duty, guard, reserve, retirees and their family members. Primary mission of the base is to provide combat support with the latest fighter aircrafts. The base was built in 1942. It was named after Col. George Holloman, a native of Rich Square, North Carolina and pioneer of early rocket and pilot-less aircraft research There are 1,522 housing units on-base, of which 190 are officer quarters and 1,332 are enlisted. City of Alamogordo, Village of Cloudcroft, Ruidoso Valley, White Sands National Monument, Lincoln National Forrest are some of the attractions near the base. There are three Alamogordo Public Schools located at Holloman Air Force Base. · Holloman Primary: Hosts grades kindergarten through second. · Holloman Intermediate: Educates third through fifth graders. · Holloman Middle: Is where sixth through eighth graders go. It is one of the most active fighter base.

The racial makeup of the town was 73.31% White, 13.20% African American, 0.58% Native American, 2.84% Asian, 0.58% Pacific Islander, 6.36% from other races, and 3.13% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 12.43% of the population. The mission has participated actively in Iraq & Afghanistan. The base has always been on the front for the combat missions of US AF.
